Help Your Children Dream Big with the CollegeCounts 529 Summer Reading Program

There’s a reason we as parents spend so much time encouraging our children to read.

Sure, they are learning the basic building blocks of language and communication. But reading is so much more than that.

Whether it’s history, fantasy, biography, mystery, or anything in between, when our children dive into a good book, they’re expanding their horizons in so many ways. Books teach us more about the world we live in, the worlds that others live in, and worlds that have yet to be discovered. Books let our imaginations run wild, all while teaching us valuable life lessons in the process.

Sometimes books inspire us to figure out what we want to do with our own lives.

That’s why CollegeCounts developed a 2019 Summer Reading Program. If your children are going to chase their dreams and do great things, they’ll need a spark to start that fire.

This summer, we have partnered with several libraries across the state of Alabama to provide free packets of career cards that will help your children learn more about various professions like doctors, teachers, carpenters, engineers, pilots, computer programmers, and more. Each card is filled with information and activities relating to these careers to help your children understand the passion that leads moms and dads all across our state to work hard and do what they love.

Local librarians are eager to pass along a set of career cards and ignite a conversation about what your children are interested in—especially if they love to write! Then, once your children have finished the activities on each card, have them show a librarian to get a few recommendations for books that will help them pursue their interests even further.

Dreaming about what we want to be when we grow up is one of the best parts about being young, isn’t it? With CollegeCounts’ Summer Reading Program, we hope those dreams will get a little bit bigger—and one day come true.

If you and your children would like to join in the fun, find a participating library near you and ask your librarian about the CollegeCounts 529 Summer Reading Program. Make sure you glance at our calendar of events to see when CollegeCounts 529 representatives will be in your area this summer.
